My Jewish Backbone or, “the Nine Lives of a Wandering Jew”

Detail from an installation “the Nine Lives of a Wandering Jew”

Made of magnetig stones (hematite),  iron, pearls and  wooden shoe stretchers.

Between the magnitic stones I have  placed Hebrew  and Yiddish notes and texts. I incotporated the color yellow to symbolize sunshine and joy but also te represent the color of the badges Jews were forced to wear during the Second World War ; badges designed to make millions of people outcasts. The wounded wanderor produces through his wandering a pearl. An oyster that has ever been wounded will never produce pearls….

The wooden shoe stretchers as a metaphor, the emblem of a long journey through eternity…DSC_0078DSC_0084DSC_0143-001DSC_0144-001DSC_0033-001

Shirat Nashim or the “Silence of the Sirens” after Kafka
This images are about a public debate about the exclusion of women from public places has recently come into view with the refusal of religious soldiers to attend official srael Defence Forces events which feathure women’s singing…. a wise rabi told a soldier among his disciples that finding himself facing women sing, he should shut his eyes and use ear plugs! The orthodox Judaism forbids a man from hearing a women sing. These soldiers adhere to the strict interpretation on the expression”Kol-B-Isha-Erva”. This might translate as “the voice of a woman is like nakedness”. Or as “the voice of a woman is like her vigina”
Well wise rabi, listen to another wise man, ever heard of Kafka? who wrote:….”now the Sirens have still more fatal weapon than their song, namely their silence….someone might possibly have escaped from their singing but from their silence, certainly never….”About the design: I transformed two Kippah’s into an headphone, transformed into an helmet. A la Geurre comme a la Geurre.
